A review of Chelsea Pub in Manhattan's Chelsea

Located at 362 West 23rd Street, Chelsea Pub is another relaxed neighborhood spot, brought to you by the same owners as West Side Tavern (next door), the Garment District’s Houndstooth Pub and Stitch Bar & Grill.  Chelsea Pub is fairly spacious; long bar on right, three communal high top tables in the middle and dining tables along the left wall.  The beer selection includes twelve taps, mostly NY State craft beers and another nine bottled beers.  The food menu offers solid pub fare (try the chicken quesadilla).  Chelsea Pub is a good candidate for the Chelsea craft-beer NYC bar crawl.

A review of Headless Horseman Tavern in Manhattan's Union Square

Located at 119 East 15th Street, The Headless Horseman Tavern takes over the space that used to house 119 Bar.  Fifteenth Street now has quite the NYC bar crawl going for it on the two blocks between Union Square and Third Avenue (six bars at our last count).  Headless Horseman has that rustic feel to it and is a new addition to the Union Square craft-beer NYC pub crawl, offering around 20 quality tap beers.  The food menu is somewhat small, but tasty (try the Turkey leg sandwich and the kale salad!).  We want to return to this spot.  Between it and Little Town NYC across the street, we could be stuck on this stretch of 15th street all day!

A Gin Gimlet recipe from the New York Times, featuring New York Distilling Company Gin

Here’s a Gin Gimlet recipe we recently came across, located at http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/12/magazine/gin-doesnt-make-you-sad.html?_r=0

Galvanized Gimlet

This gimlet packs a punch, so serve it on the rocks.

2 ounces navy-strength gin (like New York Distilling Company‘s Perry’s Tot)

½ ounce Rose’s lime juice

½ ounce fresh-squeezed lime juice.

Fill a rocks glass with ice, add ingredients and stir.

A review of Clos New York

Located at 64 Kenmare Street in NoLita, Clos New York is an intimate wine bar, specializing in Old World wines (Spain, France and Italy, mostly).  The space is mostly taken up by a 18-seat U-shaped bar (there are also a few small tables along the walls).  Nearly 50 wines by-the-glass available, along with wine bar food and caviar.  What particularly stood out were the prices.  The least expensive glass of wine cost $14, with many in the 20s and upward into the 40s, for one glass of wine!  Even by Manhattan standards, this is very pricey.  A friendly staff and a cute spot, but this place will not be around for too long, unless the prices come down.  Way down.

A review of Hudson Common in Manhattan's Hell's Kitchen

Located in the Hudson Hotel (in the room that used to be Hudson Bar) at 356 West 58th Street, Hudson Common attempts to make the casual beer hall slightly upscale.  The room is spacious with some communal tables, as well as some smaller lounge-y tables.  A food window is available for walk-up orders and the kitchen texts you when your order is ready (try the boneless buffalo wings!).  For a beer hall, we found the beer selection a bit lacking: no more than eight taps, though there were a few local NY craft beer selections.  Hudson Common is worth checking out if you’re in the nabe.

Wishing for the consistent pub crawling weather for NYC

When is it gonna warm up around here in NYC?  We’ve had only a handful of solid warm spring-like weather around here since the end of March.  And we have not yet had three consecutive days of solid, warm spring-like weather (thinking high 60s-mid-70s).  Springtime is a great NYC pub crawling opportunity, but not with the cold spring we’ve had around here thus far.  Today’s weather forecast looks promising.  So, maybe today, already in mid-May, will finally be the beginning of the solid NYC bar crawling weather!
